Big news for the Garden State! On January 20th, Governor Phil Murphy signed 153 new bills into law, six of which include new penalties for employers who misclassify workers as independent contractors or who are found to be in violation of State wage, benefit, and tax laws. This new legislation seems to closely resemble the AB5 legislation that went into effect earlier this month in California.
Now more than ever, it’s imperative to have a compliant extended workforce program. Even if you aren’t currently employing workers in California or New Jersey, we’d still highly encourage you to take a close look at your worker classifications and to make sure that you are properly identifying your talent. Worker protection seems to be a continuing trend that may eventually make its way to other parts of the country!
