At TargetCW, we’re very proud to have a great reputation with our employees and client companies. One thing we would love to see more of is our employees connecting with the client company’s culture.

The Issue

The issue isn’t the client company, it’s the company’s fear of co-employment which at times causes them to isolate temporary workers and contractors. Temporary workers are a growing part of a company’s overall workforce, and companies should update their policies to better acknowledge and work with them. Co-employment is a complex subject, but the overarching goal is to define the two classes of workers. If your temporary workers are employed through a third party agency and your managers realize, reinforce and over communicate the classification of your workforce, you’re well on your way to proper utilization. 

The Solution

There are a couple areas to pay particular attention to, first written communication. Titles, business cards, emails, etc. should all designate CW, Contingent Worker, Contractor or even the name of the third party agency. Next, discipline and reviews. Since temporaries are often project, seasonal or trial hires you should make separate forms to communicate with them. Call them “project reviews,” for example, and base the review around the project or seasonal tasks as opposed to an “employee review”.

A Reminder

Take a good look at your CW program and the level of satisfaction of your temporary workers. How does turn-over, conversion of temps into full-time employees (FTE), overall performance and satisfaction look? Temporary workers are a significant part of your company, and most companies wouldn’t neglect or marginalize their value and impact. If they do a great job, appreciate them. if you have a paid cafeteria, allow them to join others and eat. If you have a company party, allow them to attend. Slightly alter the event name to “Company Holiday Party” vs “Employee Holiday Party”.
